About Us

Manly Orthodontics is a boutique orthodontic practice that provides progressive and comprehensive Orthodontic care for patients of all ages. We have a strong focus on clinical excellence and patient experience and each patient is treated by a Specialist Orthodontist from start to finish.

We are situated opposite the Manly Wharf above Garfish Restaurant and our patients get to enjoy the beautiful views over the harbour when they come to their appointments.

What is an Orthodontist?

An Orthodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. All orthodontists are fully qualified dentists who then complete an additional three years of postgraduate study at university in orthodontics (tooth movement) and dento-facial orthopedics (facial growth and modification). This allows them to take a holistic approach to treatment and to personalise care specifically to your needs, taking into consideration many factors like age and lifestyle that may be missed by someone whom has not had specialist training.

To be registered as an orthodontist in Australia the following qualifications and registrations must be obtained.

  • Bachelor degree in Dentistry (a 5 year full-time University course)
  • Doctorate degree in Orthodontics (a 3 year full-time University course)
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

Meet the Orthodontist

Dr. Anél Blignaut was born and raised in Newcastle, South Africa. She completed her Bachelors in Surgery and Dentistry at the University of Stellenbosch as well as a Post-Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry from the University of the Western Cape.

Following graduation in 2001, she worked in a dental practice in the Netherlands for two years after which she took a sabbatical year and traveled around the world. She fell in love with Sydney during her brief visit here and at the end of 2007 relocated to Cairns, Australia. She worked alongside an orthodontist in the School Dental Clinics and rediscovered her passion for orthodontics and improving smiles.

Anél pursued her interest and completed her specialist training as an orthodontist at the University of Sydney, simultaneously obtaining Membership to the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and certification by the Australian Orthodontic Board. She is currently a member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, the Vice President of the Manly Warringah Dental Study Group, and the treasurer for the Sydney Orthodontic Alumni.

Her orthodontic treatment includes both children and adults with an emphasis on achieving facial and dental harmony. Her focus is on clinical excellence and she provides a wide range of orthodontic treatment. She is very approachable and is always happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your own or your child’s teeth.

She has a real love of the Northern Beaches and can be found most afternoons walking her dogs along any of the beautiful walks in the area. On weekends she enjoys going to the beach, hiking, catching up with friends or sampling the local eateries.

Meet the Team

From the left: Nathalie, Jacky & Oli

Nathalie is a cheerful person who loves rock climbing and missionary work. She is currently studying at university and seeks to add value to people through her actions. Our patients love her warm and open nature.

Jacky has been with the practice since 2001 when it was still owned by Dr Smyth and she is the heart and soul of the practice. She is a very caring person and makes sure that no one is forgotten at Manly Orthodontics. Her knowledge of orthodontics is fantastic and she knows how to make our patients feel right at home. She loves going to the movies, dining with friends and gardening.

Oli is currently doing his Masters in Criminology. He is a previous patient of Dr Smyth and a local from Manly. He has a very upbeat personality and loves to have a chat with our patients, making them feel at home. In his spare time he plays guitar in a band and enjoys hanging out with his mates.
